4th Annual Chicano Park Scholarship

The Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center is honored to present the 4th Annual Chicano Park Scholarship! The objective is to empower and support youth who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, cultural preservation, and community service. This scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to students who are dedicated to giving back to the Chican@ community through their educational pursuits and community engagement. By supporting a new generation of leaders, the scholarship seeks to inspire and enable students to contribute to the ongoing cultural enrichment of the community.

Meet your 2024 Scholarship Committee!

Annie Ross

Annie’s varied background includes work as an electronic resources cataloger, Spanish/English translator, arts writer/editor, Spanish software linguist, bilingual observer for the Office of the Civil Rights Monitor, computer programmer (jukebox licensing), librarian (social sciences, romance languages), Latin American bibliographer, Spanish teacher, bilingual reader for the blind, gallery assistant, and ceramics instructor. She is a longtime member of the Chicano Park Steering Committee, former board member of the Centro Cultural de la Raza, former board member of Memorial Academy of Learning and Technology, and life-long community activist.

Beatrice Zamora

Beatrice Zamora is a native San Diegan involved in advocacy, social justice, and education. Beatrice promotes cultural arts and social justice for several under-served communities in San Diego through her work as a community advocate, artist and dancer, and local author.

In 2015, Beatrice retired from a distinguished career in the California Community Colleges where she held positions as faculty and college dean. During her 30-year career Beatrice served students from California’s under-served and underrepresented communities, and in 2015 was honored as the Woman of the Year, Higher Education, by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.

Beatrice keeps active teaching and preserving indigenous dance and traditions of Mexico. As lead woman dancer of the traditional Aztec-Chichimeca group, Danza Mexi’cayotl, she and her husband, Dr. Mario E. Aguilar, Capitan General, teach children and families about their indigenous heritage and oral traditions of dance, music, language, regalia making, mythology, and spiritual practices. Their dance group is one of the first in the United States and was founded in 1980.

As a community advocate, Beatrice serves on several local boards, including The Mexi’cayotl Indio Cultural Center, The Chicano Park Steering Committee, The Community Advisory Council of the Centro Cultural de la Raza, The Kanap Kuahan Coalition, The Kumeyaay & Original Peoples Alliance, and the Community Advisory Committee for the SD Union Tribune.

 

Dr. Consuelo “Chelo” Manriquez

Dr. Consuelo “Chelo” Manriquez hails from Mexicali, Baja California. Her journey began as an educator in Los Angeles in 1989. Since then, Consuelo has dedicated herself to bilingual education across various roles, always advocating for equity and social justice.

In 2019, she co-authored the influential book “Five Practices for Improving the Success of Latino Students.” Consuelo is a passionate lifelong learner, avid traveler, and dedicated community activist. She also co-founded Calaca Press, a platform championing Latinx and Chicanx writers and poets.

Helen “Elena “Gonzales

Helen “Elena “Gonzales

Helen “Elena” Gonzales is a Chicana/Mexicana community member and educator who advocates for educational equity and access for all children, youth, and adults: ensuring the highest quality of learning within institutions of education and community-based organizations. As a retired educator, counselor, and administrator with over 35 years of experience in pre-K-12 education, university level and expanded learning opportunity programs she has worked within urban and rural school districts with diverse communities.

Ms. Gonzales professional career has included experiences as Outreach Coordinator, CSU Fresno/UCSF Medical School Health Career Opportunity Program, Volunteer Coordinator, Part Time Faculty, CSU Sacramento, Counseling Department. Principal/Vice Principal Administrator in Elementary /Middle Schools, Elk Grove Unified School District, Sacramento, CA. Most recently she served as the California Statewide Region 9 Coordinator for Expanded Learning Programs representing over six hundred schools in San Diego, Orange, and Imperial Counties for the San Diego County Office of Education.

Originally from Stockton, California as the daughter of Salvador and Carmen Gonzales her parents instilled the values of family and community, love, respect, cultural traditions, and the importance of education. These values and beliefs have impacted her efforts in both personal and professional paths. Ms. Gonzales has presented classes on her personal interest in cultural art, history, literature and provided trainings on the topics of Educational Leadership/Cultural Diversity, Counseling Latinos and Families and Supporting English Language Learners.

She has served on local and statewide educational committees and community board memberships. She is currently a Board Member of the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, San Diego, CA., and former board member of the La Raza Galleria Posada, Sacramento, CA, and Sacramento City College PUENTE Mentor Project.

Ms. Gonzales Education Degrees and Credentials include a Master’s Degree, Educational Counseling, Community College Counseling and Clear Administrative Credential K-12.

Previous Scholarship Program Overview:

The first ever Chicano Park Scholarship was launched in 2021, in collaboration with the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, Chicano Park Steering Committee, Turning Wheel Project, and San Diego Foundation in conjunction with the Chicano Park Vive! Events. The Chicano Park Scholarship aimed to honor, protect, and uplift the youth of our community while centering and learning from youth voices. The Chicano Park Scholarship is an annual effort along with the Chicano Park Vive events, and in 2021-23 we’ve received a total of sixty scholarship projects ranging from poetry, art, short stories, raps, mini lowrider models, and photos.
